Biography

Sir Edward (or Edmund the Younger) Verney was the son of Elizabeth Bray (b. c. 1513; d. after 1573), and Sir Ralph Verney, of Pendley, co. Hertford, and Middle Claydon, co. Buckingham, Sheriff of Bedfordshire and of Buckinghamshire (d. 1546).

Sir Edward Verney of Pendley married three times to:

  1. Frances Fredmayne (widow of Thomas Fredmayne, of North Marston; dsp.), dau. of John Hastings, of Elford,
  2. Audrey Carew (widow of Sir Peter Carew; d. 1588), dau. of William Gardner, of Fulmere
  3. Mary St Barbe (widow of (1) Geoffrey Turville, and (2) William St Barbe; d. 1642), dau. of John Blakney, of Sparrowham.

  • Sir Peter Carew the younger (died 1580) married Audrey Gardiner, a daughter of William Gardiner of Grove, Buckinghamshire. The couple had a son, Peter, who died young; and a daughter, Anne, who married first William Wilford, and second (in 1605) Sir Allen Apsley (1567–1630).[7] Audrey survived Sir Peter and married as her second husband Sir Edmund Verney[2] (1535–1599) of Pendley in the parish of Tring, Hertfordshire,[8] Sheriff of Buckinghamshire and Sheriff of Hertfordshire.[9]
  • Edmund Verney (Cavalier) Edmund Verney was the son of Sir Edmund Verney of Pendley Manor near Tring, Buckinghamshire and his third wife Mary Blakeney. He was the grandson of Hon. Elizabeth Verney, second daughter of the first Baron Braye. He had two elder half-brothers Sir Francis Verney who died in 1615, and Ambrose Turvile who died in 1628, and two elder half-sisters on his mother's side, Ann Turvill (who married Sir John Leeke of Edmonton), and Ursula St. Barbe, who married her stepbrother Sir Francis Verney.[3]
