About Sir Edward Awbrey of Tredomen

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Awbrey-10

National Flag of Wales
Edward Awbrey was born in Wales.
Edward is the son of William Awbrey, D.C.L. and Wilgiford Millicent Williams. His birth year is estimated to be either 1551 or 1557.

Edward inherited Abercynrig. At some point he took a loan against the property equivalent to 70% of its value. His eldest son, Sir William, sold the property in 1621 to Jeffrey Jefferies (holder of the loan) for a £300 profit. Sir William lived and died at Tredomen.

Very little is known of his life other than he was sheriff of Brecknockshire Forest in 1583, 1589 and 1599.[1]

Wife and Children

Edward Awbrey married Joan Havard (date unknown).[2] Joan inherited the manor at Tredomen from her father William Havard of Tredomen and Pontwilym.[2] Tredomen is now listed as Tredomen Court on Google maps.

They had 11 children:

  1. Sir William (bc 1581)
  2. Edward (bc 1582)
  3. Thomas (bc 1583)
  4. John (bc 1585)
  5. Hopkin (bc 1587)
  6. Havard (bc 1589)
  7. Wiligford (bc 1593)
  8. Catherine (bc 1595)
  9. Eleanor (bc 1597)
  10. Joan (bc 1599)
  11. Elizabeth (bc 1601)

Death and Will

Edward died intestate at Tredomen in 1620. Consequently, his estate was handled by a Letters of Administration. An image of the original can be found under Images. A translation to modern English was obtained and can be seen at Sir Edward Awbrey's Will. Stuart Awbrey

Edward’s widow, Lady Joan, lived another 15 years which is described on her profile.

Research Notes

Birth Location

His birth location was previously listed as either Abercynrig or Cantref, Brecknockshire. However, his father lived at Oxford after graduation and eventually owned at least 3 residences in the London area. There is no indication he returned to live at Cantref. Also, there is no indication his father ever lived at Abercynrig, after buying it from his cousin. There is information that Dr. William Aubrey’s younger brother, John, lived at Abercynrig until he died, also in 1595. So, Edward may have been born in London, or at any of the many properties his father owned in England and Wales.
The Awbrey/Havard Connection

Sir Reginald Awbrey, Sir Peter Gunter and Sir Walter Havard were knights in Bernard Newmarche’s force that conquered part of Wales.
Sir Reginald’s sister, Joan, married Sir Peter Gunter. They had a son, William and a daughter, Anne who married Sir John Havard in the early 1100s. [3]
