About Lord Edward Seymour, of Berry Pomeroy

Sir Edward Seymour was born about 1520, the second son of Sir Edward Seymour, Earl of Hertford*, Duke of Somerset & Protector of England, of Wulf Hall and his first wife Katherine Filliol. His parents were married before 1519 as the will of Sir William Filliol written in that year describes Katherine as Seymour & mentions her eldest son John Seymour. It is known that the two boys of this marriage were born early in this marriage.

By 1628 the couple were estranged and it seems his mother was residing in a convent [Sir William Filliol's revised will of 1628].

In 1635, Edward Seymour's father married again, so Katherine is presumed to have died. He and his new wife, Ann Stanhope had a son born in 1639, confusingly also named Edward Seymour.

In 1640, Edward Seymour disinherited the two sons of his first marriage in favour of those of his second marriage. The elder of those two sons, John Seymour successfully regained some of those lands, including Berry Pomeroy. He willed them to his brother Edward before John died in the Tower of London on the 19th December 1552.

Despite this disinheritance, Edward Seymour and his first son Edward Seymour seem to have remained close & Edward [the father] Knighted his son on the battlefield of Pinkie Cleugh on the 10th September 1546.

Edward married Jane Walsh before 1563 and they had a son, also named Edward Seymour born in 1563.

  • [The title of Earl of Hertford was forfeited on his execution in 1552 but the title was restored to his son Edward Seymour from his second marriage, also confusingly known as the first Earl of Hertford in 1559]

From https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Seymour,_1st_Duke_of_Somerset

Edward Seymour married twice: Firstly in about 1527, to Catherine Fillol, (or Filliol) (c.1507-1535) a daughter and co-heiress of Sir William Fillol (1453-1527), of Fillol's Hall, Essex and Woodlands, Horton, Dorset. Their 2nd son was:

2. Lord Edward Seymour (1529–1593)[58] of Berry Pomeroy, Devon, Sheriff of Devon.[59] He was sent to the Tower of London in 1551 but was later released, and became heir to his elder brother, from whom he inherited Maiden Bradley, today the seat of his descendant, the present Duke of Somerset.
