About Sir Ferdinando Wainman of Jamestown
Sir Ferdinando Wainman (also spelled Wenman, Weyman) was born c.1576 in England. He was the son of Thomas Wenman, MP and wife Jane West. Jane West was the daughter of William West, 1st Baron de la Warr and Elizabeth Strange. He married Frances Risley of Chetwood in Cou. Bucks. She was the daughter of William Risley of Chetwood. They had a daughter, name possibly Elizabeth, as shown in the 3rd volume of the Virginia Company records, where the daughter was given 4 shares.
Sir Ferdinando was a stockholder in the Virginia Company. He arrived in the colony with governor, Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr (or Lord Delaware), in June 1610. Governor West appointed him Master of Ordinance for the colony and, as such, held a seat on the Virginia Council. He arrived in Jamestown about April or May 1610 and wad dead by July or August of the same year. He was the first English knight buried in the New World.
In 2010, Smithsonian archaeologists discovered in the 1608 Jamestown Church. The church was unearthed in 2013. Four graves of early Jamestown leaders were discovered in the chancel. Archaeologists were able to recover only about 30 percent of each skeleton, but after overlaying findings from forensics testing, archaeology, micro-CT scans, genealogy and other archival records, the researchers said they were confident in the identities of the men. .In July 2015, the identities of the four skeletons were announced - Capt. Sir William West, Rev. Robert Hunt, Capt. Gabriel Archer, and Sir Ferdinando.
