The Speke family was difficult to document. Sources that had Phillippa Speke as a daughter of Sir George Speke did not show his further lineage, while many that defined the Speke ancestry including Sir George did not identify which of the Georges he was. This problem was resolved when a copy of the Visitation of Somerset, 1623, (visSom, page 103) showed clearly where Phillippa fit into the family. This chart shows: "Phill. = Edw. Bridger [Bridges] of Keynsham in Som." as daughter of "Sir Geo. Speake Knt. of the Bath, of Whitelackington co. Som living 1623 = Phill. d. of Will. Rowswell of Ford, co. Devon." He was a son of "Sir Geo. Speake Knt. of the Bath" who married (1) "Eliz. d. of Sir Antho. Luttrell" who was mother of the foregoing George, and (2) "Dorothie d. of Edw. Gilbert of London". This last Sir George was a son of "Sir Tho. Speake Knt. = Anne d. of Rich Barkley of Stoke".

When Sir George Speke and his twin brother Hugh were born in 1550 in Pucklechurch, Gloucestershire, England, their father, Sir, was 23, and their mother, Elizabeth, was 20. He married Phillipa Lady Whitlackington Somerset Roswell on November 17, 1584, in Somerset, England. They had seven children in 64 years. He died in 1625 in Somerset, England, having lived a long life of 75 years.
