About Sir George Wishart of Cliftonhall, 1st Baronet
Biographical Summary
"George Wishart, of Cliftonhall, co. Edinburgh, s. and h. of the Rev. William Wishart, Minister of Kinneill, co. Linlithgow (d. Feb. 1692), by Christian, da. of Richard Barnes, a, Magistrate of Linlithgow; was Lieut. -Col. in Carmichael's reg. of Dragoon Guards; purchased the estate of Cliftonhall aforesaid, and had a royal warrant from William III, dated 19 April 1700, for a Baronetcy [S.], but, no patent having passed, was, by Queen Anne, cr. a Baronet [S.], as above, 17 June 1706, with rem., failing heirs male of the body, to "heirs whatsoever and their heirs male for ever." On 4 Jan. 1718 he entailed the estates of Cliftonhall, Auedliston and other lands in co. Edinburgh and co. Linlithgow, on Fergusia, his 2d da. and coheir expectant. He m. firstly, Anne, da. of Major Michael Barclay, a scion of the family of Barclay, seated at Colairny, co. Fife. She d. 29 May 1708. He m. secondly, Fergusia, da. of ( — ) Maccabin. He, who was living Jan. 1718, d.s.p.m. before Aug. 1722."
