Biographical Summary
"Sir Gilbert Elliot, of Headshaw, 2nd son of Gavin Elliot of Grange and Middlemilne, co. Roxburgh, who was 4th son of Gilbert Elliot of Stobs, co. Roxburgh, was implicated in the rebellion of 1679, being declared guilty of treason, 16 July 1685, which finding was, however, rescinded by Act of Parliament 22 July 1690; was Clerk to the Privy Council [S], and having been Knighted, was created a Baronet [S], 19 April 1700. He being then of Minto, co. Roxburgh, was a Lord of Session, 25 June 1705, under the style Lord Minto, and a Lord Justiciary. He was M.P. [S] of Roxburghshire, 1702-07. He married firstly his cousin, Marion or Helen, daughter of Andrew Stevenson, Burgess of Edinburgh, by Mary, daughter of Andrew Hay of Haystoun. She died s.p.m. He married secondly (contract 17 March 1692), Jean, daughter of Sir Andrew Carre, of Cavers, co. Roxburgh. He died 1 May 1718, aged 67."
