Gilbert de Montfitchet is mentioned as a benefactor to the monks of Stratford, in a charter of Henry II, and founded the Priory at Ankerwicke in Buckinghamshire, to which Avelina and Richard, his son, and Richard, his grandson, were successively benefactors. He also gave half the Manor of Ginges in Essex to the Knights Hospitallers, and the churches of Everton and Ance to the monks of St. Neots, in County Huntingdon. Though he is mentioned as returning his knights' fees in 12th of Henry II, yet presume he was dead by that time, for his eldest son William was mentioned. He died sine prole. (Kin of Mellcene Thurman Smith, page 807)

The last known fortress of London was called the Montfichet's Castle. It stood to the west of Baynard's Castle and was founded by Gilbert de Monfichet, a native of Rouen, and relative to William I of England. He brought with him a great force, and fought gallantly in his cause at the Battle of Hastings. This tower was demolished by King John in 1213, after banishing Richard, successor to Gilbert, the actual owner. The materials were applied, in 1276, towards building the monastery of Blackfriars.
