Godfrey Vassall Webster inherited Battle Abbey in 1810 when he came of age. He was a compulsive gambler and was described as 'one of the greatest blackguards in London ... I never remember ... anybody more generally disliked, or more completely excluded from the pale of good company' by John Williams Ward described him, 5 Apr. 1810.
