He was educated at Merton College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. He fought in the First World War, in France and Mesopotamia.1 He was Temporary Captain. He gained the rank of Major in the 7th Queen's Own Hussars. He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1918. He was an instructor between 1920 and 1922 at Cavalry School, Netheravon, Wiltshire, England. He was an instructor between 1922 and 1924 at Equitation School, Weedon, Buckinghamshire, England. He gained the rank of Adjutant between 1927 and 1931 in the Leicester Yeomanry. He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Pelly, of Upton, Essex [U.K., 1840] on 3 November 1950.
