Sir Harold Alwyne Pelly, 5th Bt. was born on 27 August 1893. He was the son of Sir Harold Pelly, 4th Bt. and Anna Maria Poore. He married Caroline Earle Heywood Jones, daughter of Richard Heywood Heywood Jones and Catherine Margaret Johnston, on 27 June 1917. He died in 1981.

He gained the rank of Major in the 7th Queen's Own Hussars. He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1918. He was an instructor between 1920 and 1922 at Cavalry School, Netheravon, Wiltshire, England. He was an instructor between 1922 and 1924 at Equitation School, Weedon, Buckinghamshire, England. He gained the rank of Adjutant between 1927 and 1931 in the Leicester Yeomanry. He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Pelly, of Upton, Essex [U.K., 1840] on 3 November 1950.
