Notes

From Ormerod, George. "A Memoir on the Lancashire House of Le Noreis or Norres, and on Its Speke Branch in Particular, with Notices of Its Connections with Military Transactions at Flodden, Edinburgh, and Musselburgh." In Transactions of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire, P. 138-182. April 4th 1850, No. 6 ed. Vol. Session II,. Liverpool: Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire., 1849.

IV. John Le Norreys, son and heir, first in this list, appears in the Visitation of 1567, as Knight, and as father of Sir Henry. He had a grant from his father Alan, in 13 Edw. III. of two Carucates in Speke, the original measure of the manor; and in 28 Edw. III. he occurs as deforciant of two parts of the manor of Huyton in a fine at Preston. In 43 Edw. III. he enfeoffs two priests, as trustees, with his estate in Speke, described as Sir John Norreys, Knight.3
By his wife Catherine, daughter of Robert Balderston, Esq., he had issue Sir Henry, son and heir, and Catherine, wife of Roger le Bruyn of Stapleford in Cheshire, whose marriage was given to Geoffrey Osbaldeston by Nicolas Bruen her grandfather, for this purpose, 6 R. 2.4

  • Sir Henry, son and heir to Sir John le Norreys, and son of Cecily Mascy, succeed his to his father's estate in 1431. He married Alice Erneys, and became the lord of the entire manor of Speke with this marriage. In 1416, he arranged for his son William to marry Elizabeth, daughter of Sir James de Harington. Sir Henry died in about 1431. ~VCH: A History of the County of Lancaster: Volume 3, p. 131-140
  • Henry Norreys was betrothed by 1379 as a minor to Alice Erneys, daughter of Roger Erneys and Joan Molyneux, of Cheshire. In about 1396 Alice became the heir of the Erneys properties on the death of her brother John. On 15 Feb 1401 at Speke William de Melys, chaplain, granted to Henry le Norreys, knight of Speke, his messuages, lands, and tenants with buildings in Speke, Garstan, Aykebergh, Magna Woolton, Parua Woolton, and Halewood. These were the lands that came to Alice Erneys, wife of Henry Norreys. The Norreys family thus gained full control of the Lordship of Speke. In 1406 "Henry Noreys of Lancashire" is named in a writ of condemnation against William Travers, "that he shall do or procure no hurt or harm to Richard Rendelesham of Bury St. Edmunds and Christina his wife, or to any of the people." In 1416 Henry Norreys made provision for his son William on his marriage with Elizabeth (or Percival), the daughter of James Harrington. In 1421 Henry le Norreys and Alice his wife, daughter and heir of Roger Erneys, are named in a grant.

  • Of Sir John le Norreys, the next lord of Speke, but little is known. In 1369 he granted to feoffees his manor of Speke, together with lands in Garston, Hale, Woolton, Walton, Ince, and Lydiate.(4) He died about three years afterwards, leaving a widow and three young children — Henry, Katherine, and Agnes. In November, 1372, an agreement was entered into by Cecily his widow with Nicholas le Norreys of Halsnead,(5) and Gilbert le Norreys, coroner, with regard to the children. She was to be responsible for their living and clothing, such as belonged to their estate, for the next twelve years, and to make suitable provision for each of them when they were married.(6) But as already stated Roger Erneys, as superior lord, quickly intervened,(7) and in 1379 released to Cecily and her second husband the custody of the heir. At this time Henry was still under age, and the daughter Agnes is not mentioned.
  • Except for the dispute with John Ie Norreys, related in a note, Sir Henry's tenure seems to have been undisturbed. By his marriage with Alice Erneys he became lord of the manor.(8) In 1416 he made provision for his son William on his marriage with Elizabeth, daughter of Sir James de Harrington.(9)
  • William, son and heir of Sir Henry, succeeded about 1431.(10) A grant of land was made by him in 1433-4, and he occurs in 1453 in a bond for L40 from William Gerard.(11) He had a large family, and was succeeded by his son Thomas, who married a distant cousin Lettice,(12) daughter and heir of Thomas Norris of West Derby ; by her he had six (or seven) sons and five daughters.(13)' He died in 1487-8, seised of a messuage and land in West Derby, of four oxgangs and other land in Formby, also of the manor of Speke and land, meadow, wood, heath, and pasture in Speke, but the jurors at the inquest did not know of whom he held the same. William Norris, his son and heir, was then twenty-eight years of age.(14)
  • Sir William Norris, the successor, must therefore have been born about 1459. His knighthood appears to date from 1487, after the battle of Stoke, in which .... etc.
    • (11) Norris D. (M.B.), 611, 615. In 1458 a marriage was arranged between his daughter Elizabeth and Thomas son and heir-apparent of William Gerard of Ince, for which a despensation had been obtained as early as 1449, the parties being related in the third degree; ibid. 643-5.
