Biographical Summary
"Sir James Craufurd, afterwards 1812-39, Gregan-Craufurd, Baronet [1781], of Kilbirney, 1st s. and h., b. 11 Oct. 1761 ; was British Resident at Rotterdam, 1778 ; Secretary of Legation at Copenhagen, 1793 ; suc. to the Baronetcy, 15 Dec. 1797 ; Resident Minister at the Hanse towns, 1798 ; Minister at Copenhagen, 1802. By royal lie, 25 June 1812, he took the name of Geegan, before that of Craufurd. He m. 2 March 1792, Maria Theresa, sister of Henry, 3d Viscount Gage of Castle Island [I.], 1st da. of Gen. the Hon. Thomas Gage, by Margaret, da. and h. of Peter Kemble. She, who was b. 4 April 1762, d 21 April 1832, at Hastings, aged 70. Will pr. June 1832. He d. 9 July 1839, in his 78th year. Will pr. July 1839."

Given name at birth James Craufurd. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Craufurd, of Kilbirney, Ayrshire [G.B., 1781] on 15 December 1797. In 1812 his name was legally changed to James Gregan-Craufurd by sign manual.
