James Johnstone: Created First Earl of Annandale and Hartfell in 1661.

Charles I created James (XV) Johnstone the "First Earle of Heartfell", etc. in 1643. james was with James Grahame(the Great Marquis Montrose), at Philiphough (1646), was captured and condemned, but escaped. His estates were sequestrated. Charles II restored the estates to his son and changed his titles to "James (XVI) Johnstone, First Earl of Annandale and Hartfell, Viscount of Aunaud," Lord Johnstone of Lochwood, Lochmaben, Moffetdate, and Evandale, Feb 1661, and a year later created him "Hereditary Constable of Lochmaben Castle."

He was, while Lord Johnstone, imprisoned for a time with his father in the castles of Dumbarton, Glasgow, St. Andrews, and Edinburgh. He succeeded his father in April 1653, and was retoured heir to him 25 October of the same year. In 1657 he resigned his honours and lands for new infeftment to himself and the heirs male of his body, whom failing, to the heirs female of his body, etc. On 13 February 1661 he received a patent granting him the titels of Earl of Annandale and Hartfell, Viscount of Annand, Lord Johnstone of Lochwood, Lochmaben, Moffatdale and Evandale to him and his heirs males and the eldest heir female of his body, etc. In April of the following year. 1662, he receive a crown charter erecting his lands into the earldom of Annandale and Hartfell, with the destination in his resignation of 1657, which was ratified by parliament 1669. He died 17 July 1672. He married Lady Henrietta Douglas, daughter of William, 1st Marquis of Douglas, their marriage cotract being dated 29 May 1645. She died 1 June 1673.

Family

James Johnstone, 1st Earl of Annandale and Hartfell was born in 1625.2 He was the son of James Johnstone, 1st Earl of Hartfell and Lady Margaret Douglas.3

A contract for the marriage of James Johnstone, 1st Earl of Annandale and Hartfell and Lady Henrietta Douglas was signed on 29 May 1645.1,2

He died on 17 July 1672.2,4 He was buried on 30 July 1672 at Grey Friars, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.
