"James Stewart (or Steuart) of Goodtrees of Gutteris, co. Edinburgh, 1st son and heir apparent of Sir James Steuart (or Stewart) of the same, Lord Advocate 1692-1711 (d. 1713), by his first wife Agnes, daughter of the Rev. Robert Traill, was born about 1680; admitted advocate 10 June 1704; was M.P. [S] for Queensferry, 1705-07, and subsequently [G.B.] for Edinburgh, 1713-15, and was v.p.; created a Baronet [S], as above, 22 December 1705, with rem. to heirs male whatsoever. He became Solicitor-General [S] in 1709. He succeeded his father in 1713, who had purchased, in 1712, the family estate of Coltness, co. Lanark, from his nephew, Sir David Steuart, 2d Baronet [S 1698] of Coltness. He married in 1705, Agnes, daughter of Sir Hew Dalrymple, 1st Baronet [S 1697], of North Berwick, Lord President of the Court of Session, by his first wife, Marion, daughter of Sir Robert Hamilton, one of the Lords of Session. He died August 1727, aged about 46. His wife survived him several years."
