DEATH OF SIR JOHN MORRIS, BART. BIOGBAPHICAL SKETCH. It is with regret that we announce the death of Sir John Armine Morris, Lart, which took place at his residence, Sketty Park, at 2.30 on Wednes- day morning, by which a notable figure is re- moved from our district, and which awakens a long list of associations. The deceased baronet was in his 80th year, and had been ailing ior some time past. He was attended by Dr. Arthur Davies. He was somewhat retiring in disposition, and for years past lived quietly on his estate, and was very little known to the local public, in whose affairs he took not the slightest interest. He was born in 1813, and was a son of t.,e second baronet, ard married Miss Macdonald in 1847, by whom he had three sons and a daughter. He succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of h.s father in 1855. The Morris family, who were well- known in Swansea, possessed large estates in the neighbourhood-of tie town, and the populous district of Morriston was named after them. The late baronet s father lived at Clasemont, between Morriston and Llangyfelach, and at one time he commenced i-he erection of a new mansion near the old one. Second thoughts, how- ever, seem to have turned him from his object, and there is no doubt that in doing this he bad in view the future commercial growth of the district, and the disadvantages of a mansion in the midst of busy works &c. The mansion was only half finished, and it stood until lately as a ruin. Sir John removed to Sketty Park, where he built a really fine mansion, and where the family have since resided. The deceased baronet, who came of a remarkable family, with many branches of distinguished relationship, occu- pied the position of lay rector of Swansea, and was joint owner, with the Vicar of Swansea, of the tithes of the parish, which are still being collected by the family. During the later years of his life. Sir John seemed to enjoy nothing so much as be seclusion of his own country house and demesne. But in earlier years the hon. baronet took considerable interest of a rather passive kind in public affairs and questions of Welsh bisbcry. He contributed frequently to the columns of The Cambrian on these themes, as some of our older readers will remember. The successor to the title is Sir Robert Armine Morris, eldest son of the deceased, and his wife, now lady R. A. Morris, is the daughter of Thomas Cory, Esq., J.P., &c., formerly of Sketty, but now of Tunbri.Jge Wells. The funeral, the arrangements of which have been entrusted to JKessrs. B. Evans and Company, Temple-street, will take place on Monday, and will be private. The cortege will leave Sketty Park, at 11 o'clock for the Parish Church of St. Mary's, where the body will be interred in the family vault, which is situated at the east end of the edifice. Deceased was a J.P. and D.L. of the County of Glnmorgiu, and was for some time an officer in the 60th K fles. He was a patron of the living of Morriston, anl eldest Sill of the late Sir John M orris, and the Hoo. Lady Morrin, daughter of the fifth Viscount Tortington. He was born at Biyn House, on July 13, 1813, and educated at Wtstminster School and Sandhurst College. In December, 1847, he married Catherine Ann, daughter of Ronald Macdonaid, Esq., and succeeded to the title as third baronet, and to the states, in February, 1855. He bad issue :-1, Robert Armine, boru 1848 2, John, b. 1850 3, George Cecil, b. 1852 -1, Arthur Ronald, b. 1855 5, Herbert, b. 1858: and four daughters. The Morris family traces its descent maternally frumjOwaiu Gioyaedd, Prince of Nurth Wales (12th century), through Cadwgan F*wr, and the Pariys of Neuadd Trefawr, county of C-udigan, one ot whom was Stephen Parry, Esq., M.P. for Cardigan, 17L4 1727, and paternally from the Morrises of Bishop's Castle, Salop.
