Judging by the opulence of this tomb, you’d probably not guess the fate of the man in whose ‘honour’ it was raised. Here in Worcester Cathedral lies Sir John Beauchamp of Powick and Alcester next to his wife, Elizabeth Pateshull. Their heads rest upon a swan. As Australia was, of course, at the time unknown to the English, the colour of the bird is incorrect; it was apparently repainted black at some later date, as the Beauchamp armorial swan was white/silver (‘Argent’). As one might expect given so grand a tomb of this vintage, Sir John was a powerful figure in his day, and was a favourite of King Edward III during the first half of the 1370s. He participated in John of Gaunt’s campaign in Spain during 1372 and 1373, served as MP for Worcestershire in 1377, and in 1384 became Receiver of the Chamber and Keeper of the King's Jewels. His somewhat meteoric rise to power was, however, eventually to fall foul of the vicissitudes of feudal court politics. It proved to be his cousin, Thomas Beauchamp, 12th Earl of Warwick, who instigated his demise, with the unfortunate Sir John being arrested and impeached by the Merciless of Parliament of 1388. His beheading for treason duly followed at the Tower, with his body being returned to Worcester for burial.
Sir John was married three times, with Elizabeth being his last wife. Although his own personal career came to a bloody and ignominious end, his son - also named John – retained his father’s title.
