Biographical Summary
Sir James Caldwell, Baronet [I. 1683], of Castle Caldwell aforesaid, 1st s. and h., b. about 1722 ; ed. at Dundalk School, 1734 j Fellow Commoner of Trin. Coll., Dublin ; B.A., 1740 ; a Freeman of Londonderry, 1741 ; suc. to the Baronetcy in Feb. 1743/4, being then in France. Having distinguished himself in the Austrian Service, he was cr. by the Empress Maria Theresa, 15 March 1749, a Count of Milan in the Holy Roman Empire, with rem. to the heirs male of his body. Dep. Gov. of co. Fermanagh, and Col. of a Reg. of Militia, 1752 ; F.R.S., Feb. 1753 ; Sheriff of co. Fermanagh, 1756. He raised, 12 Jan. 1760, a Reg. of Light Horse (20th Dragoons) for the defence of Ireland, which was disbanded, 1763 ; P.C. [I.], 30 Jan. 1762 ; is said to have declined an Irish Peerage, as also the office of Chamberlain to the Empress of Germany. He m. 18 Dec. 1753, at St. Anne's, Dublin, Elizabeth (£5,000 portion), sister of Sir John Hort, 1st Baronet [I. 1767], 1st da. of Josiah Hort, D.D., Archbishop of Tuam, by Elizabeth, da. of Lieut. Col. the Hon. William Fitzmaurice, of Gallane, oo. Kerry, br. of Thomas, 1st Earl of Kerry [I.]. She, who was bap. 26 Dec. 1729, d. 11 Sep. 1778, in Dublin, and was bur. there. He d. Feb. 1784, at Castle Caldwell, and was bur. in the chapel there. Will pr. [I.] 1784.
