Notes

From East Cheshire: Past and Present: Or, A History of the Hundred of ..., Volume 1. By John Parsons Earwaker. Page 141

Norcliffe Hall, as previously mentioned, was built about the year 1830, by the late Robert Hyde Greg, Esq. A much older building, which is believed to have been called Norcliffe Hall, stood on the high ground on the right bank of the river Dean, about half a mile from Twinney Bridge. The foundations of this building were recently uncovered in draining the land.

In what is at present a large willow-bed, not far from the junction of the two rivers, the Bollin and the Dean, at Twinney Bridge, are the remains of an old mill. This mill, which will be found mentioned in the Inquisitions, deeds and fines, previously quoted, was erected in the year 1335, as shown by the following interesting charter, (translated) :c—

Be it known, &c, that I, John Fiton, lord of Bolyn, have conceded and granted, and by this present charter have confirmed to Richard, my son, and Joane his wife, one piece of land lying above Norcliffe hcth, that they may erect a mill there, on the stream of the Bolyn, and within the vill of Morlegh, and there have the usual mill rights and privileges, &c, as far as regards the vill of Morlegh. Paying thence annually a rose in the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. These being witnesses, Sir Hugh ffiton, rector of the church of Wilmeslowe, Thomas ffiton [of Gawsworth], Richard de Bromale [of Bramhall], John de Honford [of Handforth], and Gilbert de Legh, chaplain. Given at my manor-house (tnanerium tneum) of Bolyn the day of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross [Sept. 14], anno dfii MCCCXXXV. Seal a lion rampant.
