About Sir John Gainsford, VII

SIR JOHN GAINSFORD

Tudor Knight of Crowhurst Place 1469 - 1540

http://www.rh7.org/factshts/gainsfrd.pdf

We are not sure when Sir John Gainsford was born, but it was probably around 1469. During his life he was married six times and had twenty children – fifteen daughters and five sons.

Sir John was appointed Sheriff of Surrey at least three times, in 1500, 1517 and 1533; this was at a time when there were only four Justices in the whole of Surrey and so Sir John must have been quite a notable in the county.

  • Sir William Courtenay (1477/1485 – 1535) of Powderham, Devon, sometimes called "The Great",[1] was a leading member of the Devon gentry and a courtier of King Henry VIII having been from September 1512 one of the king's esquires of the body. He served as Sheriff of Devon thrice, Feb.-Nov. 1522, 1525–26 and 1533-34. He was elected Knight of the Shire for Devon in 1529.
  • He was the eldest son and heir of Sir William Courtenay (1451-1512) of Powderham by his wife Cecily Cheyne, daughter of Sir John Cheyne of Pinhoe. The family of Courtenay "of Powderham", always known thus until 1556 to distinguish it from the senior line. The family of the Earls of Devon, was one of the most influential and best connected in Devon from the 15th century onwards. The Powderham, a cadet line, was descended from Sir Philip Courtenay (1340-1406), a younger son of Hugh Courtenay, 2nd Earl of Devon (1303-1377) but eventually itself in 1831 was officially recognised as having become in 1556 holder of the Earldom of Devon inherited from a distant cousin.[2]
  • .... etc.
  • Courtenay married twice:
  • .... etc.
  • Secondly, before 27 Oct. 1512, he married Mary Gainsford (c. 1495-1572), daughter of Sir John Gainsford of Crowhurst, Surrey, by his wife Anne Hawte, who remarried after Courtenay's death Sir Anthony Kingston (died 1556) of Painswick, Gloucestershire, and went to live with him on the Courtenay manor of Chudleigh which together with Honiton had been her jointure. By Mary Gainsford Courtenay had four sons and three daughters:
    • James Courtenay (born 1521)
    • John Courtenay (born c. 1523), married Thomasine Huntington.
    • Philip Courtenay (born 1523)
    • Gertrude Courtenay (born c. 1521), married Sir John Chichester (died 1569) of Raleigh.
    • Catherine Courtenay (born 1527)
    • Elizabeth Courtenay (born 1529)
    • Thomas Courtenay (born 1533)

  • Sir Anthony Kingston (ca. 1508 – 14 April 1556) was an English royal official, holder of various positions under several Tudor monarchs.
  • Anthony Kingston was the son of Sir William Kingston of Blackfriars, London by one of Sir William's first two wives, Anne (née Berkeley), the widow of Sir John Guise (d. 30 September 1501), and Elizabeth, whose surname is unknown. He had a sister, Bridget, who married Sir George Baynham (d. 6 May 1546) of Clearwell, Gloucestershire, son and heir of Sir Christopher Baynham (d. 6 October 1557).
  • .... etc.
  • Kingston married firstly, before October 1524, Dorothy Harpur, the daughter of Robert Harpur, and secondly, by 1537, Mary Gainsford, widow of Sir William Courtenay (d.1535) of Powderham, and daughter of Sir John Gainsford of Crowhurst, Surrey. He had no issue by either marriage, but by a mistress had two illegitimate sons, Anthony and Edmund,[6] on whom by a deed of feoffment he settled part of his estates in 1547.[2]

  • ANNE GAINSFORD or GAYNSFORD (d. before 1548)
  • This Anne Gainsford was said by John Foxe, author of The Book of Martyrs, to be the daughter of John Gainsford of Crowhurst, Surrey. John Gainsford, also of Guildford, Surrey (1467-October 28, 1540) had six wives. Anne was the daughter of the second, Anne Hawte or Haute (1473-1508), Anne was likely born between 1495 and 1501. Foxe further states, giving his source as John Lowthe, archdeacon of Nottingham, who had spent the early part of his career in the Zouche household, that Anne Gainsford, as yet unmarried, was a member of Anne Boleyn's household as early as 1528. She was in possession of her mistress's copy of William Tyndale's The Obedience of the Christian Man, a book deemed heretical by Cardinal Wolsey, when Anne Boleyn's equerry, George Zouche, who was courting Anne Gainsford, filched it. Having begun to read, he refused to return it, and he was caught by the dean of the Chapel Royal, who reported the matter to Wolsey. According to George Wyatt, who wrote the first biography of Anne Boleyn c.1590, Anne Gainsford herself recounted this incident to him, but there is some doubt about that claim, given the probable date of her death. The story goes that around the time Anne Boleyn became queen, Anne Gainsford married George Zouche, who then became a gentleman pensioner to the king. Later, as Anne Zouche, Anne was obliged to testify against Queen Anne. George Zouche is Sir George Zouche of Codnor (c.1494-1557) but there is a great deal of confusion created by online genealogies. Some have George Zouche married to Anne Gainsford well before 1528 and taking a second wife in 1526. Others date their children’s births from 1523-1535 and have George remarry in 1536. Mary S. Lovell in her biography of Bess of Hardwick (Bess was raised in Lady Zouche's household at Codnor Castle) says that Anne Gainsford was a lady in waiting to both Anne Boleyn and Jane Seymour before her marriage. This would place their marriage in 1536 or later. However, S. T. Bindoff, ed, in The History of Parliament: The House of Commons 1509-1558, in the entry for John Zouche (August 27, 1534-June 19, 1586), states that he was the first son of George and Anne. The correct chronology appears to be that Anne and George married c.1533. Their first child was John, but after that matters are once again confused, with Anne listed as the mother of seven additional children (including William, George, Lucy, Anne, Margaret, and Francis), and George's second wife, Helena Lane (d.1560) credited with eleven more. Anne had died by July 16, 1548, when George made his will. In it he names his wife Ellen, three sons and four daughters. According to a family tree drawn in 1550 and showing all eleven children of the second marriage, the Eleanor and Bridget mentioned in the will belong to Helena, thus moving the date Anne died even earlier. Portrait: If the Holbein sketch of M. Souch at Windsor is not Mary Zouche, then it is probably Anne Gainsford.
  • KATHERINE GAINSFORD (c.1496-1540+)
  • Katherine Gainsford was the daughter of Sir John Gainsford of Guildford, Surrey (1467-October 28, 1540) and his second of six wives, Anne Hawte or Haute (1473-1508). She married, as his second wife, Sir William Finch of Netherfield, Sussex (1476-April 1553) and thus was the Lady Finch who attended the Field of Cloth of Gold in 1520. She was probably also the Lady Finch who greeted Anne of Cleves upon her arrival in England in 1540. By Finch, she had five children: Erasmus, Vincent, Elizabeth, Alice, and Eleanor.
  • MARY GAINSFORD (1498-February 12, 1572)
  • Mary Gainsford was the daughter of Sir John Gainsford of Crowhurst, Surrey (1467-October 28, 1540) and his second of six wives, Anne Hawte (1473-1508). She married first Sir William Courtenay of Powderham, Devon (d. November 24, 1535) by whom she was the mother of Gertrude (1521-April 30, 1566), Philip, John, Katherine, Elizabeth, James, and Thomas. Her second husband, to whom she was married by 1537, was Sir Anthony Kingston (d. April 14, 1556). They had no children and were estranged by 1552. Kingston openly kept a mistress while Mary resided at Cudleigh, Devon. Some sources say she appears to have died before Kingston was arrested and charged with treason for his part in the Stafford Plot, but one online genealogy gives the 1572 date of death. Kingston died at Cirenchester en route to his trial.

Sir John Gainsford, grandson of the above John, was twice Sheriff of Surrey and died in 1540, having married six times. (fn. 11) His heir was Thomas, his son by his fourth wife, Joan Poliver. (fn. 12) Thomas had two children, a son John, who was an idiot from birth, and who died in 1559, (fn. 13) and a daughter Anne, who married William Forster. (fn. 14) Apparently some settlement was made at the death of John. Anne Forster and her children never held the main manor here, which seems to have passed to her father's half-brother Erasmus, son of Sir John Gainsford by Grace Warham his sixth wife.
