JOHN GORDON, 14th Earl of Sutherland, PC (S 1641); born 9 March 1608/9; educated Dornoch Sch and Edinburgh and St Andrews Us; granted new charter of Hereditary Shrievalty of Sutherland 1631; leading Covenanter (first to sign) Feb 1637/8, and maintained his Covenanting zeal throughout Civil War, Lord Privy Seal Scotland March 1648/9–51; obtained a regrant of the Earldom 21 Feb 1661/2 with remainder to his eldest son and the latter's heirs male; married 1st 14 Feb 1631/2 Lady Jean Drummond (died 29 Dec 1637), only child of 1st Earl of Perth (qv), and had:

• 1a John, Lord Strathnaver; born 21 Nov 1632; died 14 Oct 1637
• 2a GEORGE, 15th Earl
• 3a Robert; born 31 Dec 1635; married (contract 14 Nov 1665) Jane (married 2nd March 1676 HughMackay of Strathy), daughter of 2nd Lord Reay (qv), and died without issue 1671
• 1a Jean; born 10 Oct 1634; married (contract 11 July 1657) Capt Robert Stewart of Eday and had issue

The 14th Earl married 2nd 24 Jan 1638/9 Anne (died without issue 29 July 1658), 2nd daughter of 7th Lord (Fraser of) Lovat (qv), and died 14 Oct 1679

John Gordon, 14th Earl of Sutherland was born on 9 March 1609.

He married, firstly, Lady Jean Drummond, daughter of James Drummond, 1st Earl of Perth and Lady Isabel Seton, on 14 February 1632.[1]

He married, secondly, Anne Lovat, daughter of Hugh Fraser, 7th Lord Lovat and Isabel Wemyss, on 24 January 1639.

He died on 14 October 1679 at age 70.

He was the son of John Gordon, 13th Earl of Sutherland and Agnes Elphinstone. He gained the title of 14th Earl of Sutherland.
