JOHN GORDON, 13th Earl of Sutherland; born 20 July 1576; having surrended the Hereditary Shrievalty and Earldom of Sutherland, was regranted them 29 April 1601 with remainder, failing heirs male of his body, to his bros Robert and Alexander and the heirs male of their bodies, whom failing, to Adam, 3rd son of 1st Marquess of Huntly (qv) and his heirs male whatsoever, obtaining simultaneously a charter once more erecting the Earldom into a regality (see above against 5th Earl);married 5 Feb 1599/1600 Agnes (died 18 Sept 1617)

cc Scarcely were the obsequies and funeral of Lady Jane Gordon finished, when, as her brother John, Earl of Sutherland, sickened and died the 11 th day of September, the year 1615, being of the age of thirty-nine years and two months, leaving his eldest son John, a child of six years and six months." cc He left his house overburdened with debt.
