He succeeded to the title of 2nd Viscount of Aithrie on 26 February 1742.
He succeeded to the title of 2nd Earl of Hopetoun on 26 February 1742.
He held the office of a Lord of Police [Scotland] between 1744 and 1760.
In 1747 he was appointed Curator Bonis (Trustee in Lunacy) for his half-uncle, 4th Earl of Annandale and Hartfell.
He held the office of Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1754.
He died on 12 February 1781 at age 76.
