About Sir John Legard, 2nd Bt.

Sir John Legard, 2nd Bt. was the son of Sir John Legard, 1st Bt. and Hon. Grace Darcy, born in 1659, he was baptised on 16 June 1659.

In 1682 he married Elizabeth Wastell, daughter of Leonard Wastell.

He then married Dorothy Cayley, daughter of Sir William Cayley, 2nd Bt. and Mary Holbech, in 1695.

He gained the title of 2nd Baronet Legard, of Ganton.

The Legard Baronetcy, of Ganton in the County of York, is a title in the Baronetage of England. Since 1959, the family seat has been Scampston Hall, in Malton, North Yorkshire.

The baronetcy was created on 29 December 1660 for John Legard, a Royalist member of the Yorkshire gentry who fought in the Civil War and sat as the Member of Parliament for Scarborough after the Restoration.

Sir John Legard, 2nd Bt. and Elizabeth Wastell had the following children, and possibly others:

  • Sir John Legard, 3rd Bt. who died on 14 Apr 1719
  • Sir Thomas Legard, 4th Bt. who died in May 1735
