About Sir John Lockhart, Lord of Castlehill

Biographical Summary

"Sir John Lockhart of Castlehill - Third son of Sir James Lockhart of Lee, was admitted advocate by the commissioners for the administration of justice, on the 4th January 1656, and readmitted after the Restoration on the 7th June 1662. The advocates on their readmission were obliged to express their regret at their misfortune in having been admitted during the late unhappy time of usurpation, and to swear the oath of allegiance, humbled upon their knees. He was nominated an Ordinary Lord, in place of Sir James Dundas of Arniston, on the 28th August 1665, and took his seat as Lord Castlehill on the 22nd November following. He was admitted one of the Lords of Justiciary on the 6th February 1671; removed from office in November 1678, on some caprice of the Duke of Lauderdale, but was restored in April 1683, in room of Lord Nairn, then excused on account of his age and infirmity."
