Margaret Melton probably the daughter of Sir John Melton (d.1474) of Aston who had been a feoffee of Richard duke of York. Her aunt, Thomasia, was the wife of Sir Henry Pierrepont who was murdered in 1457, a kinsman of Nicholas. His son, a younger Sir Henry Pierrepont was one of Nicholas’ new feoffees when he settled his estates shortly before going to France in 1475.
Nicholas had no living issue by Margaret by the time he died on 3 April 1481, and it was recorded at his inquisition post mortem that his brother, Ralph, was his next heir and was aged 24 years and more (Renshaw, 1956).

Research Notes
Date of death
Some online family trees state that he died on 11 June 1510.[9] This date had almost certainly been confused with his grandson Sir John Melton, who died on 11 July 1510.[2]
His correct date of death has not been confirmed. Through a process of elimination, he is possibly the John Melton, knight, whose inquisition post mortem was held in 1474-5 (14 Edward IV).[10] There was also an inquisition held in at York 1457-8 (36 Henry VI) for a John Melton, esquire,[11] although this is more likely to be his son. This requires further research.
Incorrect second marriage
Some online family trees state that he married a second wife, Eleanor St John, daughter of Sir John St John, sometime after 20 October 1501.[9] This has been confused with his grandson Sir John Melton, who married Eleanor St John.[2][1]
