John Melton possibly died on 23 April 1458.[citation needed] He is possibly the John Melton, esquire, whose inquisition post mortem was held at Yorkshire in 1457-8 (36 Henry VI).

Knighthood: No reliable source has been found to show he was knighted. The Visitation of Yorkshire[1] and Baronia Anglica Concentrata[2] both record him simply as "John Melton." The catalogue entry for the inquisition post mortem in 1457-8 describes the deceased as "Melton, John, esq: Yorks."
