14 April 1552: Precept of Clare Constat by John Sandilandis fiar of Caldor and James Sandilandis of Caldor Knight his father, in favour of Andrew Murray of Blakbarony as heir to the deceased Mr John Murray of Blakbarony, his father in a fourth part of the lands of Muristonis and Torfyn in the Barony of Caldor. 24 September 1573: Contract of Marriage between Johnne Murray son and heir of umquhile Andro Murray of Blackbarony with assent of Sir Walter Scott of Branxholm [Branxholme], kt, Patrick Murray of Falayhill [Falahill] and James Borthwick of Glengelt, his curators for their interest and Alexander Hamiltoun [Hamilton] now of Innerwick, Margaret Hamiltoun his sister german, with consent of George Home of Broxmouth and Mr John Scharp [Sharp], advocate, curators to the said Alexander for their interest, whereby the said Johnne binds himself to infeft the said Margaret and himself in conjunct fee in the haill the land and tenement perteining to him lying upon the South side of the South gait of Edinburgh, the lands of Preistishope [Priesthope], Kings acre, Haltoun and Miln thereof and Fala, on the other hand the said Alexander Hamiltoun bound himself to pay to the said John Murray 3000 merks and gave in security therefore John Pennycuik [Pennycook] elder of that ilk and John Aitchison, Maister Cuncheour (coiner). 29 September 1601: Charter under the Great Seal of Scotland by which James VI, King of Scots, confirms possession of the lands of Eliebank alias Elieburne to Gideon Murray of Elibank. These lands had previously been given to Gideon by Sir John Murray of Ettlestoun (Eddleston, otherwise Blackbarony). RMS 1593-1608: charter number 1245

Biographical Summary

"(335) Sir John Murray of Blackbarony. Member of Assize, Raid of Ruthven, 9th February 1584 (Criminal Trials), and was M.P. for Peeblesshire 1608-09.

x He married, first, Margaret, daughter of Sir Alexander Hamilton of Innerwick. Her Will recorded 3rd July 1609 (Edinburgh). They had issue:-

  • Andrew Murray, died unmarried v.p. ARMS on Seal, 1617. - A fetterlock; on a chief three stars (Laing's Seals).
  • Archibald (No. 336 below).
  • Sir John Murray of Ravelrig.
  • Colonel Walter Murray of Pilmore. From him apparently descended : -
  • * Colonel John Murray of Pilmuir. Will recorded 23rd August 1745 (Edinburgh). His widow was Helen Murray, whose Will was recorded 20th December 1760 Edinburgh). The Will of their son, Lieutenant Patrick Murray of Pilmure, was recorded 12th January 1745 (Edinburgh).
  • Alexander Murray, had a son: -
  • * John Murray, apprenticed to a merchant 5th June 1650 (Apprentice Roll).
  • Patrick Murray.
  • William Murray.
