Her Last Will and Testament
Dame Grizel Betoun, Lady Blackbarony, made her last will and testament at Edinburgh on 2 August 1579. The inventory of her moveable estate was given up by John Murray of Blackbarony and Thomas Greg, portioner of Culrope: "in name & behalf of Agnes, Andro, Judianne (Gideon) and Williame Murrayis hir lawfull barnes". In her last will and testament she nominated and appointed: "Agnes, Judianne (Gideon) and William Murrayis brotheris & sister hir barnes hir onlie executrs & intromettors wt hir guds & geir". She left five hundred merks in legacy to her daughter Agnes. Confirmation was granted on 26 December 1579. Death
Dame Grissel Bethune died on 18 August 1579. She made her last will and testament at Edinburgh on 2 August 1579 and it seems quite likely, therefore, probable even, that she died there. 8 February 1551-52: Extract Registered Contract of Marriage between Andro Murray of Blackbarony and Dame Grissale Betoun [Beaton] relict of umquhile William Scott of Kyrkhurd [Kirkurd], kt, whereby the said Andro resigns for new infeftment in favour himself and his said wife "his gret lugeing bak land and foreland under and above with the pertinents lyand in Bells wynd within the Burgh of Edinburgh also the lands of Ballincrieff [Ballencrieff, Aberlady pa., East Lothian] and Pvray (Poverhouse) with their pertinents". It contains an obligation by Walter Scott of Branxholm [Branxholme], kt, and Robert Betoun of Creith [Creich] to pay 1200 marks to the said Andro Murray. Recorded in the Books of Counsel. 9 February 1551-52: Charter under the Great Seal of Scotland which confirms possession of the lands of Ballincreif and others, located within in the sheriffdom of Edinburgh and constabulary of Haddington, to Andrew Murray of Blackbarony and his wife Grisell Beton: "ANDREE MURRAY de Blakbarony et Domine GRISILLIDI BETOUN ejus conjugi". Andrew Murray of Blackbarony had previously resigned this land to the crown in order to receive a new infeftment in favour of himself and his new wife. They were to hold in conjunct fee and liferent and the land was to descend to their lawful male heirs, whom failing to Andrew's male heirs. RMS: 679

Grizel Bethune was born circa 1520.[1] She was the daughter of Sir John Bethune, 2nd of Creich and Janet Hay.[2],[1] She married, firstly, Sir William Scott of Kirkurd and Buccleuch, younger, son of Sir Walter Scott, 3rd of Buccleuch and Elizabeth Carmichael, circa 1548.[2],[1] She married, secondly, Sir Andrew Murray of Blackbarony on 8 February 1552.[2],[1] She died on 18 August 1579 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[1] She was also known as Grizel Betoun.[2] From circa 1548, her married name became Scott.[2] From 8 February 1552, her married name became Murray.[2] Child of Grizel Bethune and Sir Andrew Murray of Blackbarony *1.
