Family and Education b. c.1674, 1st surv. s. of Sir William Walter, 2nd Bt., by his 1st w. Mary, da. of John Tufton, 2nd Earl of Thanet. educ. Queen’s, Oxf. 2l Aug. 1691. m. c.1700,1 Elizabeth, da. of Sir Thomas Vernon, M.P., London merchant, s.p. suc. fa. 5 Mar. 1694.

Biography Walter was the great grandson of Sir John Walter, M.P., of Wolvercot, Oxon., lord chief baron of the Exchequer and a benefactor of Jesus College, Oxford. His grandfather, the first baronet, had represented the county under Charles II. Reelected unopposed as a Tory for Oxford in 1715 and 1722, he voted against the Administration in every recorded division. He died 11 June 1722, leaving £1,000 to his friend Lord Harcourt, and his whole estate to his wife, with reversion to his brother, who succeeded him to the baronetcy.2 His widow subsequently married Harcourt.
