John married Catherine DE SHERBURNE (See Link for Ancestry),519 daughter of (Sir) Robert DE SHERBURNE Knight and Alicia DE BLACKBURN, circa 1335. Catherine was born circa 1315 in Stonyhurst, Clitheroe, Lancaster, England 519 and died after 1354.519

Children from this marriage were:

1. Richard TEMPEST 26 was born circa 1338 in Bracewell, West Riding, Yorkshire, England 26 and died before Oct 1379 of Bracewell, West Riding, Yorkshire, England.26
2. Margaret 'Joan' TEMPEST was born circa 1347 in Bracewell, West Riding, Yorkshire, England and died of Radcliffe Tower, Yorkshire, England.

Sir John Tempest, Knt., of Bracewell.

b. 24 Aug. 1283, in ward to the Crown, had livery of his father's lands Oct. 1304. He joined the Earl of Lancaster's rising to subvert the power of Piers Gaveston but was pardoned 1313. In 1316 he was joint lord of Bracewell, Stock, and Waddington. He joined the second rebellion, was imprisoned, but released and pardoned 1322 and fined £10. He was knight of the shire for Yorkshire 1324, and summoned to attend the Grand Council at Westminster. (do these notes refer to his father?)

By undated charter, Will. de Eston granted him his capital messuage, water mill, and moiety of the manor of Broughton in Craven. In 1335 he was summoned for military service in Guyenne.

He m. Katherine, dau. of Sir Robert Sherburne, Knt., seneschal of Blackburnshire; she was living 1353 and owned land in Wood Plumpton.

He d. 1359, having by her had:

• I. John (Sir), his heir;
• II. William (Sir) of Studley and Hertford;
• III. Peter, d. beyond the seas 3 Oct. 1361.

WHO WAS THE WIFE OF SIR JOHN TEMPEST (b. ca 1313)?

As noted above, the Dodsworth MS that EBT used as evidence for the marriage of the first John Tempest to Margaret Holand actually said she was married to the second John. This formulation is followed by a number of authorities. As noted above, it is well established that Margaret Holand, the daughter of Robert Holand and Maud la Zouche, was married to John la Warre who died in 1331. ....

EBT marshals considerable evidence that Katherine Sherburne, born about 1320, was the wife of Sir John Tempest. Katherine was the daughter of Sir Robert Sherburne of Mitton by his wife Alice, daughter of Sir John de Blackburne of Wiswell by Margaret daughter of Robert de Holand and Elizabeth de Samlesbury. ....
