  • .... Sir William Hoo of Hastings had served three sovereigns in ambassadorial, diplomatic, and other distinguished ways during forty years. He died Lord Hoo and Hastings, 22d November 1410, aged 75. His first wife was Alice de St. Omer, daughter and coheiress of Nicolas, Lord de Malmaynes, of the baronial Kent family who came with the Conqueror, and who were heired chiefly by the Crevequeres, barons of Chatham and Leeds Castle. Sir William Hoo and Alice de St. Omer had Thomas, who succeed his father, and in more ways than one. .... In the roll of the knights of the garter, Sir Thomas Hoo, lord Hoo and Hastings, is entered as elected in 1445, and these services are the explanation of his K.G. In 1460 William, lord Hastings, had K.G. Sir Thomas had two brothers, John and William, and one sister, 'Margaret, who married the wealthy Thomas St. Clere, from which marriage the family of Gage is descended.' The antiquary adds, 'The descendants of the daughter Margaret were ultimately the heirs of Thomas Hoo who died in 1486.' This was the last of the line. He died 22nd Nov. 1410, and was succeeded by his son, Thomas Hoo, who married twice, and by each wife had a son, both named Thomas.
  • Sir Thomas Hoo, whose monument is at Horsham, was the son by the first wife. Camden calls him the "noble Baron Hoo," and he rendered great and important services to his sovereign, alike as soldier and a lawyer. .... etc.
  • On the 6th June 1448, he was created a baron by the title of Baron Hoo, of Hoo, co. Bedford, and of Hastings, in Sussex. .... Dugdale did not know the date of his death, but referred only to his will as dated 12th Feb. 1455. A copy, or rather perhaps full extracts from that will are among the MSS. at the College of Arms. By an inquisition taken at Battle, on 28th April, 33 Hen. VI. it was found that he died on 13th Feb. 1455, the day after the date of his will, leaving one daughter (by his first wife, Anne, the heiress of Sir Nicholas Wychingham), aged thirty years at her father's death, then married to Geoffrey Bulleyn, and who so became ancestor to Queen Elizabeth; and three daughters (by his second wife Eleanor, daughter and co-heiress of Lionel Lord Welles), viz. 1. Another Anna, aged seven years on her father's death, who married Sir Roger Copley, of Roughey, in which chantry the monument is: 2. On this inquistion his cousin of the half blood, Sir Wm. Bulleyn was found to be his heir; but by an inquisition taken at Dunstable in Nov. 1486, it appears that the true date of the death was 8th Oct. and not 23rd Nov. 1486, and that his cousin William Boleyn succeeded to the estates, not as heir general, but under a settlement dated 10 Dec. 13 Edw. IV. under which the heirs of Anne Boleyn, mother of William, took in default of heirs of the body of Thomas Hoo; and it was found that his heirs were the descendants of Margaret Hoo, (the sister of Sir Thomas Hoo, knt. father of both Lord Hoo and his half-brother,) who married a St. Clere. .... etc. _________________________

He was twice married; by his first wife he had one daughter named Anne, who married during her father's lifetime, Sir Geoffrey Bulleyne, Knight, ancestor of Queen Elizabeth. Elizabeth married Sir Thomas Massingberg, citizen and mercer of London, and afterwards John Devenish of Hellingly.

  • Thomas St Clere (28 October 1401 – 1435) was a son of Sir Philip St Clere of Penshurst Place. He was a major landowner whose estates included property in eight English counties.
  • Thomas was the younger son of Sir Philip St Clere and his wife Margaret de Loveyne. At an enquiry held on 6 March 1423/4 to assess whether Thomas had reached the age of majority, a total of twelve witnesses testified that he had been born at East Grinstead on 28 October 1401 and baptised at the church there on the same day.[1] Thomas’ parents died during his childhood and their property was inherited by their oldest son, John St Clere. However, John in turn died on 2 November 1418, at which stage his younger brother Thomas became his heir. The extensive range of properties that Thomas inherited were situated in a total of eight counties – Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Kent, Leicestershire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Suffolk and Surrey.[2]
  • Thomas St Clere married Margaret, daughter of Sir William Hoo and his wife Alice St Omer. Thomas was still a minor in the wardship of Henry V at the time of his marriage but the necessary licence had not obtained from the King. On 5 February 1422/3, a pardon was granted to Sir John Pelham who had arranged the marriage.[3] The record of this pardon states that John had been ordered to have Thomas unmarried before the King in Chancery at a certain day but, nevertheless, John caused Thomas to be married in the meantime; this suggests that the marriage probably took place fairly soon before the pardon was granted, probably in 1422. On 8 February 1423/4, Thomas paid £200 to Henry VI in order to be forgiven for his own involvement in the irregularity.[4]
  • Thomas and Margaret were the parents of:
    • Elizabeth St Clere – married William Lovell
    • Eleanor St Clere – married Sir John Gage
    • Edith St Clere – married Sir Richard Harcourt

          • m2. Eleanor Welles (dau of Lionel Welles, Lord Welles)
            • (2) Anne Hoo (b c1446)
            • m. Sir Roger Copley
            • (3) Eleanor Hoo (b c1448)
            • m1. Thomas Echingham (dsp)
            • m2. (by 1468) Sir James Carew of Beddington
            • (4) Elizabeth Hoo (b c1450)
            • m1. Thomas Massingberd
            • m2. Sir John Devenish of Hellingleigh
        • m2. Elizabeth Etchingham (dau of William de Etchingham)
          • b. Thomas Hoo (dsp or dspm 08.10.1486)
          • TCP reports that this Thomas either dsp or dspm. However, Visitation (which reports that he died in 1480) shows him with the following family. Some caution with this connection is recommended. It is possible that it is not exact but 'not far off': for example, it is possible that Thomas had a daughter whose husband or son took the name Hoo and was one of the undermentioned Thomases.
          • m. _ Norwood
            • (1) Thomas Hoo of Hoo (d 20.03.1516)
            • m. Maude Bardolph (dau of Edmond Bardolph)
              • (A) Thomas Hoo of Hoo (d 11.06.1551)
              • m. _ Newnham (dau of John Newman or Newnham of Hatfield)
                • (i) Thomas Hoo of Hoo
                • m. Lucy Brockett (sister of Sir John Brockett)
                  • (a) Thomas (or Nicholas) Hoo (of Hoo)
                  • Visitation ends with this generation. It is a presumption that Thomas (or his younger brother Nicholas) was father of the following William whose family details come from BEB1841 (Bickley of Attleborough).
                    • ((1)) William Hoo of the Hoo possibly of this generation
                    • m. Mary Bickley (dau of Sir Francis Bickley, 1st Bart of Attleburgh)
                      • ((A)) Thomas Hoo of the Hoo (dsp)
                      • ((B)) Susannah Hoo (bpt 26.12.1639, d 11.06.1673)
                      • m. (01.05.1655) Sir Jonathan Keate, 1st Bart of The Hoo (d 1700)
                      • BEB1841 reports that Susannah was "in a direct line from the Lord of Hastings and Hoo, of whose famiy she was the heir general, and the sole inheritrix of those ancient posessions that remained to the barony; the Lord, her ancestor ...". Note that we do not show Susannah as a direct descendant of Lord Hoo but of his half-brother.
                  • (b) Margaret Hoo
                  • m. George Asden
                  • (c) Grace Hoo
                  • m. Francis Markham
                  • (d)+ other issue - Nicholas (or Thomas), Jane, Thomasin
                • (ii) Anne Hoo (bur 30.10.1575)
                • m. Thomas Reade of Abingdon (bur 27.04.1556)
                • (iii) Dorothy Hoo
                • m. William Cater of Uffington
                • (iii) Margaret Hoo
                • m. Nicholas Brockett
      • B. Joan Hoo (d 30.05.1394) possibly of this generation
      • m. (before 27.04.1371) Henry Ferrers, 4th Lord of Groby (b 16.02.1355/6, d 03.02.1387/8)

    • 2. Cecily Hoo probably of this generation
    • m. John Bacon of Hessett
