Sir Mason Durie KNZM FRSNZ FRANZCP is one of New Zealand’s most respected academics and was knighted in 2010 for services to public and Māori health. In 2002, he was awarded a Doctor of Literature from Massey University and in 2008 received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from Otago University. Professor Durie is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists, a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand, and a Fellow of the Humanities Council of New Zealand Academy. In the New Year Honour's 2001 Sir Mason was appointed as a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit For services to Māori. In the New Year Honour's 2010 Durie was appointed as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori health and public health services in particular.
Te Whare Tapa Whā Te Whare Tapa Whā is a model of health and wellbeing for Māori that was developed by Sir Mason Durie. In this model, the house stands for our overall holistic health. The walls are the different parts of our health that hold up our wellbeing and quality of life. The four walls of Te Whare Tapa Whā are equally important. They hold each other up, as well as supporting the roof of the house. The four walls are:
