About Sir Peter Gunter, Knight, of Tregunter

Curator's Note: A Peter Gunter seems to have appeared in Wales in the 11th century, perhaps with Bernard de Neumarché (aka Newmarch). According to Wikipedia, Neufmarché (c. 1050 – c. 1125) was "a minor Norman lord who rose to power in the Welsh Marches before successfully undertaking the invasion and conquest of the Kingdom of Brycheiniog between 1088 and 1095. Out of the ruins of the Welsh kingdom, he created the Anglo-Norman lordship of Brecon." In his manuscripts on the Awbrey family (p. 15), Harold Williams Lloyd states that Newmarch distributed his conquered land among his knights/followers, granting Tregunter to Peter Gunter; Abercynrig and Slwch to Sir Reginald Awbrey; and Gilestone to Sir Giles Pierrepont. Peter Gunter is said to have married Sir Reginald Awbrey's daughter Jane. A later generation of Gunter married into the Pierrepont family, at which time the lands of Gilestone (Gilston) passed into the Gunter hands.

However, evidence is lacking as to Peter Gunter's parentage, and especially any evidence linking him to Reginald (or Renaud) I Ivrea, count palatine of Burgundy and Adeliza (Alice) of Normandy. He is not listed among their children. For this reason, he is being detached from these parents until evidence or documentation is provided.

Gunters of Tregunter and Gilston (Note: aka Gilestone) [from pp. 87-88 of Annals and Antiquities...County Families of Wales, Vol. I by Thomas Nicholas (London, 1872)

"The first of this family was 'Sir' Peter Gunter, or Gaunt d'or, an assistant of Newmarch's in the reduction of Breicheiniog. He was given a manor at Tregunter, otherwise known as Gunterstone--a place long ago alienated from the powerful family which indelibly inscribed their name upon it--,which his descendants possessed for six or seven generations, until they removed to Gilston, in the parish of Llanfigan, perhaps under stress of weather, or, more probably, esteeming the Vale of Usk more desirable than the colder neighborhood of Talgarth."

Sir Peter GUNTER, Knight, was born abt 1034 in Normandy, France.

Sir Peter was known as the "Knight of the golden glove" so called from the three 'gauntlets or,' which he bore upon his sable shield-bearings, who aided in the subjugation of Wales in the fourth year of William Rufus and is also stated to have previously followed the fortunes of the Conqueror himself. Sir Peter's motto was "Fai y Gallo" (As he may), which has been ever since retained by the Gunters.

He married Jane (Joan) Awbrey, daughter of Sir Reginald Awbrey, at Tregunter, Brecon, Wales. She was born ca 1035 in Aber-Cynrig, Brecon, Wales.
