About Sir Ralph Dutton of Sherbourne, Kt.

Biography

OXFORD DICTIONARY OF NATIONAL BIOGRAPHY

…. In the years before the civil war the Duttons were rich enough to be able to establish a younger son firmly within the gentry community of Gloucestershire. John Dutton's younger brother, Sir Ralph Dutton (1601-1646), was provided with his own estate at Standish. He was knighted in 1624, served as sheriff in 1630, and was a gentleman of the privy chamber extraordinary to Charles I. Unlike his brother, Sir Ralph continued the family tradition of maintaining close links with the mercantile élite of London through marriage. In 1624 he married Mary, coheir of William Duncomb, a London haberdasher, with the consent of her grandfather Sir Thomas Bennet. A royalist like his brother, in 1642 he appeared at Nottingham with a newly raised regiment of horse, and was subsequently adjutant to the royalist governor of Oxford. …John Dutton had no male heir and the manor of Sherborne passed by entail to his nephew William Dutton (1642-1675), the elder son of Sir Ralph Dutton.
