One record says his sons Thomas and John settled at Gloucester Point, and that Thomas was the father of Robert I. Other records give Richar d I as father of Robert. The next two paragraphs come from "The Lost Branch of the Anderson Family" by Janice Caldwell/published in 1995/ 400 copies; this comes from copy 304. He resided in York Co., Va., where he was a clerk of the Court unti l 1662. On 18 March of that year he patented 200 acres of land in Glouceste r Co., Va., where he became Justice of the Peace. At his death he was a resident of King and Queen Co., Va., where he is said to have also se rved as Justice of the Peace. He is no doubt named for his father, it bein g an English custom to give the father's name to the third born son. He is believed to have been a Minister in York County. Beverly Fleet, who abstracted and published records of York Co., made the following not e in reference to him: "Mr. Anderson Clk in this entry is evidently the Re v. Richard Anderson. We know practically nothing of him." He married a woman whose name is not known, although she has been named in at least one genealogical publication as Mary Overton. If Richard was married to a Mary Overton, then she probably was a siste r to Maj. Gen. Robert Overton, father of Wm. Overton. This comes from Vol. I of Malcolm H. Harris's "Old New Kent County, Some Account of the Planters....in New Kent County" On the 18 March, 1662, Richard Anderson bought 200 acres of land of Robert Jones, which he had purchased of Thomas Leechman and John Bennett, lying on the north side of the York River, which had been surveyed for Robert Hube rd and thence northward upon Tanks Creek. Thomas Vicaris was granted by patent on 29 April 1693, a tract of 360 acres of land in King and Que en County, on a small creek running into Poropotanke Creek, next to th e land of Richard Anderson, Hayes Creek, the land of Timothy Ellis, the lan d of John Perrin and theland of John Williams.

Life Sketch

At age 17, Richard immigrated to the American colonies a few weeks before his father did, leaving on July 4, 1635 on the ship "Transport." They are both listed in Hotten's "The Original lists of Persons of Quality" under this heading, "Register of the names of all ye passinger wch passed from ye Port of London for on whole yeare endinge at Xmas 1635:" His brothers John and Thomas remained in England.

Father and son settled in Gloucester county, Virginia. Unfortunately all of Gloucester County's colonial records burned in an 1820 county courthouse fire and were burned again in the Civil War at Richmond, Virginia. Without evidence from the Gloucester County Court records to connect them we will probably never be able to document these individuals or establish proof of their relationships. What was the reason they sailed separately, by merely 3 weeks? Did the father stay behind because his wife was too ill to travel?

There is no record of a name for his wife, however one of their children was named Bartelot Anderson. The practice at the time was to name a child using the maiden name of the mother, and so it is widely believed by many family members that his wife's maiden name was Bartelot. There are records of a Mary Anderson, and it could be suggested that his wife's name was Mary, but it hasn't been proven that this Mary Anderson was indeed married to this Richard Anderson.

In 1657 there are various records in York county courthouse such as wills and land records. Richard is also listed as a juror during this year.

Richard Anderson arrived aboard the ship Transport in July 1635. The ships manifest says he was 17 therefore he was born in 1618. York County W&D Books 1646 Richard Anderson in York County. Family records are incomplete, no one really knows the year Richard died. He purchased property near West Point, near the junction of Pamunkey, Mattaponi and York Rivers. Land in New Kent, Virginia were obtained by 1666 near the Totopotomey's Creek. I cannot find any records beyond 1666. When I find proof of the date he died I'll change this memorial accordingly.

Descendants listed Richard's name as an ancestor on their U.S. Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications. None of these records give his wife's name, unfortunately.
