• Eleanor, daughter of Sir Piers Dutton, of Halton. He married Joan, or Jane, daughter and heiress of Sir William Stanley, of Tatton, by his wife Joan, daughter and heiress of Sir William Masey of Tatton. This Joan Masey was the widow of Sir John Brereton, the half brother of Sir Andrew Brereton, of Brereton, (1460-1506). Sir Richard died in 1557, in Islington, London. His son and heir, Geoffrey Brereton, married Alice, daughter of Piers Leycester, of Nether Tabley, Cheshire. He died in 1565 and was succeeded by his son and heir, Richard, who married Dorothy, daughter of Sir Richard Egerton, of Ridley, the great grandson of Sir Philip Egerton. of Egerton, by his wife, Eleanor, daughter and heiress of Sir Randle Brereton III., of Malpas ; Richard died in 1598 without issue. He settled all his estates upon his kinsman, Sir Thomas Egerton, who was afterwards Lord Chancellor of England (1603-1607). These Breretons held the Tatton estates from 1543 to 1598. • two only daughters who were heiresses : First, Katherine, daughter of Sir Maurice Berkeley, of Beverton, Gloucestershire, by his wife, Anne, daughter of Reginald West, fifth Baron West and first Baron Delawarr. This Katherine was the sister and heiress of Sir William Berkely, of Stoke Gifford, Gloucester, and also heiress of the manor of Moore, Wiltshire. Sir John Brereton's only child by this consort was Wyburga, who married Sir William Compton, Knight, of Compton Wyniate, Warwickshire ; died 1528. From them were descended the Earl of Northampton family. Sir John Brereton's second wife was Jane, or Joan, daughter and heiress of Sir Geoffrey Masey, of Tatton, the widow of William Stanley, of Tatton, by whom he had one son, Philip, heir to the Tatton estates, who died without issue.

• William Stanley (family of Stanley, Cheshire) of Tatton, died in 1498. Joan, his widow, afterwards married Sir Edward Pickering, in 1500, and lastly Sir John de Brereton, of Lea Hall, Cheshire, by whom she had one son, Philip, who died without issue. She was the daughter and heiress of Sir Geoffrey Masey. Her only child by her first husband was Jane, or Joan, the heiress of Tatton. She had two consorts. The first was John Ashton, son and heir of Sir Thomas Ashton, of Ashton, super Mersey, Cheshire ; she was then but eight years old ; he died young without issue by her, in 1511. Her second husband was Sir Richard Brereton, second son of Sir Randle Brereton IV., of Malpas.
• Sir Richard Brereton L, of Tatton, died in 1557, at Islington, London. He married Jane, daughter of Sir William Stanley, of Tatton; she died in 1570, aged seventy-seven. By her he had two sons and one daughter: 1. Richard, his heir; 2. Geoffrey; 3. Anne, wife of John Booth, of Barton, Lancashire.
• Richard Brereton, of Tatton, died in 1551, during his father's life. He married Dorothy, daughter of Thurstan de Tildesley, of Lancashire. By her he had no issue.
• Geoffrey Brereton II., of Tatton, second son, was born in 1535, died in 1565. He married Alice, daughter of Piers Leycester, of Nether Tabley, Cheshire. By her he had one son, Richard, his heir, and one daughter, Anne, who died issueless.

By John Ashton, her first husband, who died in 1513, Joan Stanley, the daughter, had no issue; but by her second, Sir Richard Brereton, a younger son of Sir Randle Brereton of Malpas, she had two sons and a daughter. (fn. 41) The eldest, Richard, died without issue, before his parents; (fn. 42) the second, Geoffrey, died in 1565, leaving an only son Richard, who at his grandfather's death in 1570 succeeded to Worsley. (fn. 43) He married Dorothy daughter of Sir Richard Egerton, of Ridley in Cheshire, but their only child Richard died in infancy. It was no doubt by Dorothy's influence that the Worsley manors were then granted by will to her father's illegitimate son, Sir Thomas Egerton, a distinguished lawyer, who rose to be Lord Chancellor, and was created Viscount Brackley in 1616. (fn. 44) Richard Brereton died in 1598; his widow Dorothy afterwards married Sir Peter Legh of Lyme, and dying in 1639 was buried at Eccles with her former husband. (fn. 45)

On 10 October in 11 [?Henry VIII], Richard Brereton, knt, and his wife, Joan, the daughter of William Stanley, esq, son of William Stanley, knt, petitioned the king concerning the granting of letters patent of restitution. ( year ca. 1520)
