About Sir Richard Fowell, of Fowelscombe
The case against having (as it is seen in some genealogies) Mary Fowell (Walrond) as the wife of Richard and the mother of Jane/Joane is strong.
The book from 1841 "A Genealogical and Heraldic History of the Extinct and Dormant Baronetcies of England, Ireland and Scotland" on page 207 says,
"SIR RICHARD FOWHIL, knt. of Fowhilscombe, m. first, Blanch, daughter and co-heir of Hayes of Devon; and secondly, Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Richard Edgcombe, knt. sheriff of Devon in 1487. By the former he had issue,
THOMAS, his heir, and
JOANE, married, first, to Sir Philip Courtenay, knt. of Loughter, second son of Sir Philip Courtenay, knt. of Molland, both in Devon, and had by him an only daughter,
Elizabeth Courtenay, married to Sir William Strode, knt. of Newenham Park, in Devon, ancestor, by her, of the present Strodes of Newenham.
She wedded, secondly, Humphrey Prideaux, esq. of Thoughborough and Adeston, in Devon, ancestor, by her of the present Sir Edmund Prideaux, bart. of Netherton, in that county."
