About Sir Richard de Arundel (FitzAlan)

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/FitzAlan-602

Birth and Parents

Richard was the son of John FitzAlan/de Arundel and Eleanor Mautravers.[1] His birth date is not known, but his older brother John, his parents' main heir, was born on 30 November 1364 and he is thought to have been his parents' fifth son.[2][3] It has been guesstimated as about 1370 - it may have been a bit later.

Marriage and Children

Richard married before 1407, his wife having the first name Alice: her family origins are not known. She was the widow of Roger Burley of Birley, Herefordshire, who died in 1399.[2][3]

They had four children:

  1. Henry,[2][3] who died in 1412 and was buried at Waltham Abbey, Essex[4]
  2. Philippa,[2][3] named in her father's will[5]
  3. Joan, who married Thomas Willoughby[2][3] and who was named in her father's will[5]
  4. Eleanor, who married William St George[2][3] and who was named in her father's will[5]

Life and Lands

Richard held lands at Banstead and Walton in Surrey,[6] Witchampton in Dorset and Brandon and Wolston[7] in Warwickshire.[2][3]

In 1400 Richard inherited all the lands of his brother William.[8]He was also named in the 1402 will of William's widow, Agnes.[9]

Richard served as a king's knight - one of the king's own knights. In November 1401 a tournament was held in London between Richard and someone from Lombardy, with Henry IV commanding a seat to be made for him so he could watch it.[2][3][10]

Richard was Constable of Rochester Castle, Kent from 1400 to 1413,[2][3] and of Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland from 1403[11] to 1415.[12] He was three times Sheriff of Herefordshire, in 1404-5, 1406-7 and 1412-1413.[2][3][13]

Richard may have served militarily in South Wales in the period 144-6 when there is a record the expenses of a Richard Arundell there.[14]

In 1410 Richard and his wife were sued in relation to the administration of the estate of his wife's first husband.[2][3][15]

In 1415 Richard was granted a royal annuity of 100 marks after surrendering the constableship of Bamburgh Castle.[16]

Death

Richard FitzAlan died on 3 June 1419.[2][3] In his will, dated 8 July 1417, he:[5][17]

  • requested burial in the Chapel of Our Lady, Rochester Abbey, Kent,
  • desired his executors to find someone to make a pilgrimage to Rome and Jerusalem for the good of his soul
  • left his moveable property to be equally divided between his daughters Philippa, Joan and Eleanor.

Richard's wife survived him, going on to marry John Keighey/Kyghley.

The manor of WALTON-ON-THEHILL (Waleton, Wauton, xi-xvi cent.) was held in 1086 by Richard de Tonbridge …. What next occurred in the descent is extremely difficult to trace. … After this the Braoses disappear, and the next lord of the manor was Richard, Earl of Arundel, nephew and heir to John de Warenne, Earl of Surrey, whose only sister Alice married Edmund, Earl of Arundel. (fn. 24) Richard's son John succeeded him, and settled one-third of the manors of Buckland, West Betchworth, and Walton, upon his wife Eleanor. She married, secondly, Sir Reginald Cobham, who died in 1403 seised of these estates in his wife's right. Eleanor survived him two years. (fn. 25) Her second son William appears to have had the remaining two-thirds of Walton Manor, with the reversion of his mother's dower; for in 1401, he having lately died, all his share in Walton was granted to his next brother Richard and his wife Alice for life, which grant was confirmed and renewed at several subsequent dates. (fn. 26) Alice outlived her husband over twelve years, and held the manor until her death in 1437, when it reverted to the king. (fn. 27)

Turchil held half a hide in BRANDON before and after the Conquest, but in 1086 Wlsi was holding it of him. (fn. 81) … conveyed it to Sir Walter Pavely and others, who sold it in 1369 to Sir John de Delves, (fn. 100) whose brother Hervey sold it in the following year to Sir John Arundell (son of the Earl of Arundel). (fn. 101) He died in 1378, when the manor passed to his younger son (Sir) William, (fn. 102) who settled it for life on his wife Agnes, with remainder to his brother Sir Richard Arundell, whose wife Alice recovered dower in the manor in 1420. (fn. 103) Sir Richard left two daughters, and the manor was assigned to Eleanor wife of Sir William St. George, who died without issue surviving. Her sister Joan had married Thomas Willoughby, whose son Sir Robert died in 1465; his eldest son Robert died young and the second son Christopher inherited the manor on the death of Sir William St. George in 1472.
