About Sir Robert Belt, Kt.

· He was a merchant and was admitted a Freeman of York, per patris, in 1599/1600.

· His brother William purchased half of the manor of Bossall on Robert’s behalf. The second half appears to have been bought by the BELT brother’s brother in law James BOYES, husband of their sister Alice.

· It is believed that Robert built the original Bossall Hall before 1644, by which time he was Lord of Bossall Manor.

· He was a sheriff of York in 1614, Alderman in 1623 and Lord Mayor in 1628 and 1640.

· His knighthood was conferred in August 1640.

· He was disenfranchised and dispossessed of the manor of Bossall in 1644, following the Battle of Marston Moor, largely due to his strong support for King Charles I.

· Robert wrote his will in 1652 and it was proved by the executor, his eldest son Leonard, on 9 Oct 1656. He left his family well provided.
