In 1449, he is styled Thomas Greynvyle, son and heir of William Greynvile, Esq.; and with Anne his wife, grants to Richard Assherigge a tenement in Bydeford, doing suit to their courts. Dated at Bydeford, Tuesday after St. Bartholomew's Day, 27 Hen. VI [26 August 1449].

Several IPMs confirm the Grenvilles held the manor of Bideford of the honour of Gloucester by knight service (military tenure), for which the age of majority was 21. Suit of court was the duty to attend and make judgments at the manor court. This duty was attached to particular holdings of land.

In 1453, Thomas Grenville and Elizabeth his wife, grant to John Rede, all that his land in Bideford, which John Bishop and others held, by grant of William Hankford, knight, John Hankeford, Richard Geynvyle, William Freye, and Richard Conyan, parson of the church of Lytheham. Dated at Bydeford, Sunday before the Conversion of St Paul, 31 Hen. VI [21 January 1453].

IV [1481/2] Sir Thomas and his second wife grant to Richard Rede all that his land in Bideford, which John Bishop and others held by grant of William Hankeford, Kt., John Hankeford, Richard Greyneville, William Freye, and Richard Covyan, parson of the church of Lytheham. The deed is dated at Bideford the Sunday before the Conversion of St. Paul, 31st Henry VI." (1460) "He married first, Anne, daughter of Sir Philip Courtenay (the second of that name), of Powderham, Knight, their marriage being celebrated in he Umberleigh Chapel in Atherington Parish, by the licence of Edmund Lacy, Bishop of Exeter, 7th September, 1447. By her he had no issue. He married secondly, Elizabeth, sister to Sir Theobald Gorges, Kt., and dying 1st Richard III, left issue, two sons, viz., Thomas, who succeeded him, and John, a Priest, who was instituted, sede vacante, to the living of Bideford by Archbishop Warham, 21st May 1504, and died in 1509."

Sir Thomas I Grenville (1430-1483)

Sir Thomas I Grenville (1430-1483) (son), the first member of the family to modernise his surname by omitting the particule "de". He served as Sheriff of Gloucester in 1480 and Sheriff of Cornwall in 1483.[37] He married twice, firstly in 1447 in the Basset family 's Umberleigh Chapel to Anne Courtenay, a daughter of Sir Philip II Courtenay (1404-1463) of Powderham , by his wife Elizabeth Hungerford, daughter of Walter Hungerford, 1st Baron Hungerford (died 1449). One of her brothers was Peter Courtenay (died 1492) Bishop of Exeter .[38] The marriage was childless. He married secondly to Elizabeth Gorges, a sister of Sir Theobald Gorges.His younger son Rev. John Grenville (died 1509) was Rector of Bideford from 1504.
