Sir Walter Reynell, MP of Trumpington & Badlingham

Sir Walter Reynell, knt. of Trumpington and of Badlingham, in Cambridgeshire, and of East Ogwell, in Devonshire, married Margaret, eldest daughter and eventuaheir sole heir of William Stighull, alias Style, by his first wife, Constance, or Elizabeth, West, oldest of the three daughters and co-heirs of Robert de Malston, in the county of Deem, by his wife, Muriell, daughter and heir of Thomas Thorber. Upon this marriage Reynells removed altogether out of Cambridgeshire, and settled permanently in Devon, first at East Ogwell, where the ruins of their old mansion house are to be seen near the church.

Sir Walter Reynell had issue, three sons and two daughters,

• i. John (or Stephen) who died before his father. Married Agnes Chichester
• ii. Walter, succeeded his father. Married Joanna Walrond
• iii. Robert, d. unmarried
• iv. Alicia, m. in 1396 (??), — Trevillian.
• v. Eleanor, m. William Fouhel.esq. of Fouhels-Coome, in the parish of Ughorough. iu the county of Devon, M.P for Totness, 33rd of King Henry VI. 1455. He d. 23rd March, and she, 9th April, 1507, and were both buried in the Fowell aisle of Ugborough Church.

THE MANORS OF EAST AND WEST OGWELL AND OF HOLBEAM

At the time of the Domesday survey the manor of East Ogwell was held by William Pictavensis, or Peyteviu, under Ralph de Pomerai. In the reign of Henry II. Hugh Pictavensis held it, and in 27 Henry III. (1242) Richard Pictavensis, or Peytevin. In 24 Edward I. (1295) it was held in equal shares by Richard Clavill and Robert de Malston. In 8 Edward II. (1314) Hugh de Malston held both parts.1 He had a son Robert who married Muriel, daughter and heiress of Thomas Thorber, by whom he had a daughter Elizabeth, who married William Stighull, or Style, whose daughter Margaret, by her marriage with Walter Reynell, brought the manor of East Ogwell to the Reynell family tempo. This Walter was the son of Walter Reynell, of Battington, in Cambridgeshire, by Joan, daughter and heiress of John Bassingbourne, who was also the heiress of Alau le Francis.
Walter Reynell died in 1384, seized of the manors of East Ogwell and Malston, in right of his wife. He had a son Stephen, who married Agnes Chichester. Their eldest son, Robert, died without issue, and their second son, Walter, inherited East Ogwell and Malston. He was present at the battle of Agincourt in 1415; was Governor of Calais, and a knight of the shire of Devon in 1455. He married, about 1411, Joan, daughter of William Walrond, of Bradfield, and died in 1475. ....
