William Cleland 12th Cleland of that ilk. Chief about 1597 (?). William, the son and successor of Alexander, married the sister (Elizabeth ( ?) or Marion) of Walter Stewart, the first Lord Blantyre. (Nisbet) His wife Elizabeth was a daughter of Sir John Stewart of Minto by his wife Margaret, daughter of James Stewart of Cardonald. (Document.) Mentioned, apparently as the heir, in 1565, 1572. As Chief in 1600, 1601. In 1572 charged with being guilty art and part in the murders of Darnley and the two Regents. William Cleland of Cleland, with his brothers, Arthur and John, and John Cleland in Foscane, Gavin Cleland in Glenhuif, James Robertson of Ernouk (William Cleland's cousin), and many others, are mentioned in the " Remission to the Duke of Chatelherault and others, 1565," thus:- Cleland: 20
The will of "William Cleland of that ilk, par. of Calder-Cleire, regality of Dalkeith, Sher. of Edinburgh," is confirmed, 20th June, 1608. (Commiss. of Edin.) Arthur Cleland (22), his brother. John Cleland (23), his brother. William Cleland (24), of Ormistonhill, and James (25), his son ; Robert Kneland (26), of Fairmylne, and John (27), his son, are evidently, from the above, near relatives of William Cleland, 12th of that ilk.Janet Cleland (28), spouse of William Grenschelis of that ilk, is probably a near relative of William Cleland of that ilk, since in 1589 we find his signature, that of William Cleland of Knowhobilhill, and that of John Cleland, Notary, to a sale of land by her and her husband.
