About Sir William Cockburn of Langton, 1st Baronet

Biographical Summary

"William Cockburn of Langton, co Berwick, Heretable Usher [S], son and heir of William Cockburn, of Langton, by Janet, daughter of (--) Home of Wedderburn; succeeded his father 15 February 1587; was M.P. [S] for Berwickshire, 1612, and was created a Baronet [S], 22 November 1627; the patent being sealed 16 April 1629, but not entered in the Great Seal Register, with rem. to heirs male whatsoever, and with a grant of, presumably, 16,000 acres in Nova Scotia, of which his son had seizin in April 1629. He married, about 1600, Helen 4th daughter of Alexander (Elphinstone), 4th Lord Elphinstone [S] by Jean, daughter of William (Livingstone) Lord Livingstone [S]. He died in or about December 1628. His widow married Henry Rollo of Woodside."

    Sir William Cockburn of Langton, 1st Bt. was the son of William Cockburn of Langton and Janet Home.2,3 He married Helen Elphinstone, daughter of Alexander Elphinstone, 4th Lord Elphinstone and Jean Livingstone, circa 1600.1,3 He died circa December 1628.3
    He held the office of Principal Usher [Scotland] in 1587.4,2 In 1595 he was granted the lands and barony of Langtoun.4 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Berwickshire [Scotland] in 1612.2 He was created 1st Baronet Cockburn of Langton, co. Berwicks [Nova Scotia] on 22 November 1622, with special remainder to heirs male whatsoever.2
