William Erskine, 1585.] — After Archbishop Montgomery's surrender, the king gave the revenue and the title to Mr William Erskine, parson of Campsey, and commendator of Paisley, which he had gotten after the forfeiture of Lord Claud Hamilton, anno 1585. This Mr Erskine was never in orders, and a titular bishop only. "Sir William Alexander son of Alexander Alexander and Mariam, Earl of Stirling, born 1567, married to Janet Erskine in 1601 dau of Sir Wm Erskine who goes back to Sir Wm de Erskine faithful adherent to Robert de Bruce and knighted in 1329.Sir Robt De Erskine appt. by David II, as keeper and Capt of Stirling Castle 1346 d. 1385.He died impoverished in 1640 in London , buried in High Church of Sterling, Scotland."
