About Sir William Hope of Kirkliston, 1st Baronet
Biographical Summary
"Sir William Hope, of Kirkliston, 9th and yst. but 2d surv. s. of Sir James Hope, of Hopetoun, co. Linlithgow (d. Nov. 1661, aged 47), by Anne, da. and h. of Robert Foulis, of Leadhills, co. Lanark, was b. at Edinburgh, 15 April 1660 ; served in the army ; travelled much abroad ; was an accomplished Cavalier, renowed for skill in fencing and horsemanship, and gracefulness and agility in dancing ; was formerly of Grantoun, in Midlothian, but subsequently of Kirkliston aforesaid, and, having been Knighted, was cr. a Baronet [S.], as above, 1 March 1698, with rem. to heirs male whatsoever. He was many years, and till his death, Deputy Governor, of Edinburgh Castle. In 1705 he purchased, for £7,500, the estate of Balcomie, co. Fife. He m., in or before 1682, Elizabeth, da. of ( — ) Clerk. He d. at Edinburgh (of a fever caused by over-dancing), 1 Feb. 1724, and was bur. in the Canongate Church there, aged 63."
