• The Inquisition Post Mortem of Sir William Mallory is dated of ‘xxiiii die September’ (24th September) in the first year of the reign of ‘Edward sexti’ (1547), confirming that Sir William Mallory died not long before.
• The document states it is the ‘post mortem Willi[am] Malore Militis (Knight)’ and then list of lands and estates in ‘Studley’, ‘Grantley and Wynkesley’ and later ‘Northallerton’, ‘Rippon’ and ‘Nunwyke’ (now Nunwick), all in North Yorkshire. Nunwick is located very near to Norton-Conyers, the birthplace of Sir John Norton, Sir William Mallory’s father-in-law. As these towns were named after the large families of the area, it may be interesting to trace the relationship (possibility through marriage) between the Mallory, Norton, and Nunwyke families.
• The name of ‘Anne Malore’ is then mentioned in the Inquisition, though the surrounding words are heavily abbreviated making it difficult to decipher her precise relationship with the words that follow her name: ‘Malore Militis defunct’ (Mallory, Knight, the deceased). It is likely that she was his daughter.
• The name of ‘Will Malore’ is also repeatedly noted, followed by the word ‘fil’, confirming that he was the son of Sir William Mallory.
• The date of Sir William’s death is not stated until the penultimate line of the Inquisition: ‘Will Malorye…obiit xxvii die Aprilis’ (died on the 27th day of April) in the first year of the reign of Edward VI (1547).
• The document also confirms that ‘Cristofore Malorye’ was named ‘fil et heres’ (son and heir) of Sir William Mallory, at the age of ‘xxii’. This indicates that Christopher Mallory was born in 1525.
