Sir William Moton, Kt.

Sir William Moton of Peckleton, knight, was born about 1305, son of Sir William Moton the elder. The surname Moton was spelled in various ways, among them being Multun, Mutun and Mutton. Between 1326 and 1327 he married his first wife, Joan Inge, the widow of Eudo la Zouche. She was the daughter of Sir William Inge, Chief Justice of England, Justice of the Common Pleas and Margery Grapinel, They had one son, Sir Robert Moton. (Sir William Moton the elder seems to have died by 1333. He appears in the De Banco Roll of Easter, 1327; and William the younger is last described as son of William Moton in 1333. After that date, he is called simply "William Moton."} His wife Joan passed away before 1356. His second wife was Elizabeth, and some believe that he died between 1356 and 1362. Others think that the year 1356 is too early; a Patent Roll entry of July, 1356, relates to William Moton and Elisabeth, his second wife, who had lately recovered their presentation to the church of Chelrey, Berkshire. Elizabeth was deceased by 1362 for, at Michaelmas in that year, William of Chiltwood, clerk, described as executor of the will of Elisabeth, who was the wife of William Moton, chivaler, was plaintiff against Robert Moton, chivaler, in a plea of twenty pounds. Many conclude that 1362 is the year of his death inasmuch as church records refer to a knight called 'Mutton,' a one-time mayor of Leicester whose burial was recorded in 1362 at Greyfriars Franciscan Friary, Leicester. The location of his burial is referenced by John Leland, writing before 1543, in which he refers to the Greyfriars of Leicester that stood at the end of Wigston's Hospital and the burials there of King Richard III and a knight called 'Mutton,' a one-time mayor of Leicester. It is concluded that in all probability the tomb that Leland noticed was of Sir William Moton of Peckleton, knight, who was buried there in 1362.
