About Sir William le Boteler, 9th Lord of Warrington

Biography

From http://cybergata.com/roots/3570.htm

William Fitz William le Boteler was born about 1309. He called himself William Fitz William le Boteler, lord of Warrington in a deed, 1328, in which he gave to place of land in the Market "stret" to Mathew de Southworth. His mother Sibilla was still alive at the time. Again, 15 May 1330 he calls himself William Fitz William le Boteler lord of Warrington on another deed, this time he gave Adam Southworth, for life, two acres and half a rood of land in Burtonwood, with housebot and haybot for himself and two tenants wherewith to build on and enclose the land, and also to burn. William had an extensive estate with many tenants. His name appears on many deeds and charters through out his life.

Sir William died 3 Mar 1380. He was at least seventy-one years old when he died. His wife, Elizabeth, had died before him. Elizabeth de Argentine was on of two daughters and coheiresses of the house of Argenteyn. (This should have been Elizabeth de Havering . (*See notes below.) The children of William and his wife Elizabeth were:

  • Richard, eldest son who married Joan, daughter of Thomas Dutton, and died without issue before 1343.
  • John, who was knighted before 32 Edward II, and who ultimately was heir to the family estates.
  • Norman, who was granted the lands called Mosswood in Burtonwood by his father in 1349
  • Elizabeth, who married Sir Piers, son of Edmund de Dutton and brother and heir of Sir Lawrence de Dutton, Sir Piers fought at Shrewsbury under the banner of Hotspur, and was afterwards pardoned for it. He was made keeper of Northwood park in 1423 and died in 1433 at age 66.

(According to George Ormerod's History of Chester, Elizabeth, the wife of Sir Piers Dutton was the daughter of Sir John le Boteler rather than his sister.)

~The Annals of the Lords of Warrington, Vol. I, pg. 161, 162, 171. 180-198

Notes

The William Boteler who married Elizabeth Argentine was NOT William Boteler of Warrington as often claimed in print. I went around the mulberry bush on that one, too, before I got it straightened out. Elizabeth Argentine actually married (lst) before 1326, William Boteler, son of Ralph Boteler, of Pulverbatch, co. Salop; married (2nd) after 1336 and before 1349, Gilbert de Elsfield. She was still living 1376, and died soon after without issue.

My source for this is: Victoria County History of Hertford, 4:111-112

  • 6. ALICE PLUMPTON, was married (1st) by contract dated 1351 RICHARD DE SHERBURNE (or SHIREBURNE), Knt., of Aighton (in Mitton), Lancashire, son of John Sherburne, Knt., by his wife, Margaret. They had one son, Richard, and two daughters, Joan and Margaret. In 1361 he granted the moiety share of the manor of Aighton (in Mitton), Lancashire lately belonging to his uncle, William de Sherburne. Richard de Sherburne's date of death is unknown. His widow, Alice, married (2nd) about 1364 JOHN LE BOTELER (or BUTLER), Knt., of Bewsey (in Warrington), Lancashire, Sheriff of Lancashire, Knight of the Shire for Lancashire, Steward of the Wapentakes of West Derby and Salfordshire, Lancashire for John of Gaunt, Constable of Liverpool Castle, Warden of the parks of Toxteth, Croxteth, and Simonswood and of West Derby Forest, '2nd but eldest surviving son and heir of William le Boteler, Knt., of Bewsey (in Warrington), Lancashire, by his wife, Elizabeth'. He was born about 1328. They had two sons, William, K.B., and John, and two daughters. John le Boteler served under John, Duke of Lancaster [of Gaunt] in Gascony in 1371 and fought in Aquitaine 1372-1373. He founded the Boteler chantry in Warrington church. In 1385 he accompanied the Master of the order of St. James of Portugal to Portugal on an embassy regarding John of Gaunt's claims to the throne of Portugal. In 1386 he was one of the commissioners appointed to hear the depositions in the heraldic suit between Scrope and Grosvenor. In 1389 he went on the expedition to Barbary, was taken prisoner, and was ransomed the following year. He was a legatee in the 1392 will of Robert Roos, Knt., of Ingmanthorpe, Yorkshire, who bequeathed him a sword inlaid with silver. SIR JOHN BOTELER died shortly before January 1399/1400. His widow, Alice, was living in November 1408, when she obtained a license from the Archbishop of York to engage a private chaplain.

    • 1366. May 4. Westminster } John le Boteler. "Miles."
      • } William de Radcliffe.
  • Sir John le Boteler was 'eldest son and — at the time of his earliest return to Parliament — heir-apparent of Sir William le Boteler, Baron of Warrington, whom he succeeded in 1380'. He was probably the same who was returned to the Parliaments of 1372, 1375-6, 1376-7 and 1377, as he certainly was to those of 1379, 1380, 1388, and 1397. He died in 1399. A namesake and contomporary — John le Boteler, of Rawcliffe — may have been the knight of tbe shire at one or more of the first-named dates, though the circumstance that the Baron of Warrington sat in the latter Parliaments renders this improbable.
  • William de Radcliffe. (See Parl. 1344.)
