Sister Agnes Walsh

Sister Agnes Walsh (1896-1993) was posthumously awarded Yad Vashem Righteous Among Nations and British Hero of the Holocaust.

Born in Hull in 1896 spending her early childhood in Lowgate, she went on to become a Catholic nun.
After working in several countries, she came to a convent at Cadouin in the Dordogne region of France.
It was here during the war, that Sister Agnes and her mother superior Sister Louise Garnier decided to risk their lives by hiding a Jewish family in the convent.
The family called Crémieux consisted of the parents, a six-year-old son and two nine-month-old baby twins. The sisters treated the entire family devotedly and they remained safe until France was liberated in 1944. After the war the family kept in close touch with Sister Agnes up until her death in 1993.

The plaque unveiled in 2019 marks the site of the house where Sister Agnes lived as a child.
