"... When the Port Macquarie & District Family History Society began in 1985, we recorded everyone’s family interests. I listed the information on cards and discovered that Barbara’s Jane Selina Smith was the sister of Terry’s Emily Susannah Smith and until then they had no idea that they had any connection with one another. So, they worked together on their families for years sharing information.

The Smith girls’ parents were William and Harriet (née Moon) who had married at St Luke’s Church of England in Dapto in 1853, and the witnesses were Harriet’s parents, Thomas and Harriet Moon.

Harriet had grown up in Jamberoo where Thomas worked as a builder in the area.
William was from Dapto where he was born in 1825.

... Two things eluded their research: the deaths of Thomas Moon and William Smith.
To this date Thomas Moon has never been identified.
However, through their combined work Barbara and Terry finally took a chance on one William Smith that Barbara had found in a reference in the Sydney Morning Herald 25 Jan 1876: ‘A Man Found Dead on Illawarra Road’. He was known by the man who found him, and they both shared the same name — William Smith.

The outcome was correct. William Smith was from the Gannon’s Forest (Hurstville) area, and he used to go to the local grocer, William Smith, in Illawarra Road.

It was the Coroner’s Inquest recorded in the Evening News 24 Jan 1876 that confirmed this was their ancestor, as his son James Samuel Smith had identified him, gave his age (48), and that he had left a widow and eight children.

So, there was little doubt. William was described as a ‘wanderer’ and rarely at home, spending his time fishing and oyster farming in the Georges River."
